The former Clínica Barceloneta was a medical centre providing intermediate care from 1988 until 2014, when it closed down. The set of buildings offers nearly 3,000 square metres of space distributed over several floors, with a ground floor and six upper floors in some parts, and a ground floor and two upper floors in others.

The buildings will house the new CAP Barceloneta, with more services thanks to the rollout of more specialist care services in primary healthcare centres in recent years and the broader range of services through the addition of new professionals (dieticians-nutritionists, dental hygiene staff, physiotherapists, emotional well-being figures etc.).

Primary healthcare services in Barceloneta are currently being provided in a more limited space on the premises of the Hospital del Mar.

Besides the signing of the purchase, an agreement has also been signed between Barcelona City Council, the Catalan Health Service and the Parc Sanitari Pere Virgili, with the latter to take charge of the management, maintenance, security and surveillance of the buildings acquired until their use is definitively granted to the Catalan Health Service.

The acquisition was approved by the Government Commission in December 2023 to satisfy one of the agreements in the last joint commission between Barcelona City Council and the Government of Catalonia, last October. The purpose of the session was to review the rollout of the Municipal Charter, with agreement on prioritising action on certain primary and community healthcare facilities (CAP) in the city of Barcelona, including the CAP Barceloneta. This was also a commitment acquired in the new agreement on improving the healthcare network from 23 June, between Barcelona City Council, the Ministry for Health at the Government of Catalonia and the Barcelona Health Consortium.
