Corpus Christi in Barcelona marks its 700th anniversary online

The tradition consists of making an egg dance on the water jets of fountains in cloisters, courtyards and gardens, which are decorated for the occasion with flowers and cherries. This year’s celebration moves from the streets to the internet, with a special online programme.

While there are some activities in the days before Corpus Christi, from 11 to 14 June, most activities in the programme can be followed on the festival website and on Barcelona Popular Culture’s social media (Instagram, Twitter, Facebook and YouTube).

The celebration starts with the chimes from the Pi church and the cathedral on 11 June, at 12 noon. Social media will be covering the chimes, as well as offering the chance to see the Dancing Egg and listen to the music from the opening retinue. While the music won’t be ringing out around the streets in a procession, there will be a chance to enjoy an organ concert from the cathedral on Sunday 14 June in the evening.

Numerous activities are programmed and the audio-visual content being offered on social media includes:

  • Videos of interviews, round tables and presentations on different aspects of Corpus Christi in Barcelona.
  • The exhibition “Corpus de Barcelona”.
  • “El Joc del Corpus de Barcelona”, a game for families to do their own procession at home with cut-outs of elements from the popular retinue.
  • Corpus Christi procession in Barcelona, virtually on this occasion.
  • Special website by the History Archive, with historical documents and images of the Dancing Egg at the Casa de l’Ardiaca last century.
  • Dancing Egg decorations in the Jardins de Rubió i Lluch, created by the Catifaires del Raval.
  • Virtual version of the Catifa de Gràcia floral decoration, in response to a call from the Catifaires de Gràcia for people to send in images and drawings to create a mosaic.

All the activities have their own page at barcelona.cat/corpus, which also features the rest of activities being prepared to mark Corpus Christs and to run until the end of the year.
