Night bus network extended with new lines and more frequent stops
The Barcelona Metropolitan Area (AMB) has created two new NitBus lines (N23 and N24), which boost current services in the city of Barcelona. This means the current lines N3 and N4 are being split to better meet the demand and avoid saturating certain specific night-time Metropolitan Bus lines. To do so, AMB has also improved three other lines: N28, N13 and N6.
Lines N3 and N4 split to create lines N23 and N24
The N3 is being split with the addition of a new line, the N23. To reinforce line N3, which runs between Can Cuiàs-Ciutat Meridiana and Collblanc, the AMB has created the new line N23. Starting from 30 April, it will connect Sants station and the Esquerra de l’Eixample with the centre of Barcelona and will offer a quicker connection with Montcada i Reixac via Avinguda Meridiana. With this measure, travellers between the two towns will be able to save to 20 minutes.
Part of the route in Barcelona is shared by both lines (Avinguda de la Meridiana, Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes and as far as Carrer d’Aribau), so coordinated departures will allow stops every 10 minutes on the shared stretch.
The N4 will keep the route between the neighbourhoods of Horta and El Carmel to Plaça de Catalunya. However, now it will also continue on Ronda de la Universitat, Ronda de Sant Antoni and Avinguda del Paral·lel as far as the Maritime Station (WTC) and will cover the neighbourhoods of Poble-sec and Sant Antoni. The new N24 will begin in Barceloneta, go through Plaça de Catalunya, continue as far as Canyelles and end its route in Plaça de les Roquetes. Running every 20 minutes, it will provide a new connection from Nou Barris and Vall d’Hebron to Barcelona city centre.
Extension and improvement of lines N28, N13 and N6
To improve line N28, which currently connects Fòrum-Diagonal Mar to Collblanc, starting on 30 April it will be extended to L’Hospitalet de Llobregat, with ten new stops to cover the entire Pubilla Cases, La Florida and Can Serra area, which had no NitBus service until now, to avoid saturating lines N2 and N14.
The AMB has also shortened the route of line N6, which connects Barcelona to Santa Coloma de Gramenet, going along the coast, Plaça Catalunya and Nou Barris. Starting 30 April, the circulation of line N6 in Nou Barris will be limited to Canyelles, and the entire route through the Roquetes neighbourhood will be covered by the new line N24.
Finally, line N13, which connects Barcelona to Sant Boi, has improved its coverage of the Camps Blancs neighbourhood. Likewise, the route from Barcelona to Sant Boi will go along Carrer Sepúlveda instead of Gran Via, its route until now. This means that the two lines going to the town of Sant Boi (N13 and N20) will follow the same route and have the same stops.
NitBus, the night bus service for Barcelona and the metropolitan area
The NitBus is the night bus service that runs to 18 towns in the Barcelona Metropolitan Area. The AMB currently has 176 vehicles running every 20 minutes from 10:30 pm to 6 am. With the new improvements, the night-time Metropolitan Bus service is expanding and offering 23 lines.
The NitBus is also offering on-demand stops between official stops to ensure safer and more equitable mobility. This service ensures the safety of more vulnerable groups, such as women and minors, and enables users to get as close to their destination as possible at night. This is already operating in specific stretches of some lines, and the AMB’s entire night bus service running outside Barcelona’s ring roads will soon be adding it.
Finally, the entire fleet of NitBus buses is equipped with video surveillance cameras, and the newly installed covered stops are lit at night, a measure that has led to a considerable drop in the number of safety incidents reported.
