Jardí de Xavier Benguerel

Author:
Massana School

The installation presented by the Massana School for the Xavier Benguerel Gardens seeks to draw the visitor into a serene space that is disconnected from the world. It creates a mood inspired by the hypnotic fascination that comes from gazing at reflections on the surface of water. This effect is replicated by using a set of rotating plastic glass cylinders lit from within, which project a surface of shifting watery light onto the floor. It’s a play of reflections that dance thanks to interaction with the visitors, who themselves create the relaxing texture of the sea.

And it is also a reminder of the El Poblenou neighbourhood’s relationship with the sea, a presence that is both important and ever-changing. The Massana School reconnects with this element through the metaphor of the elusive nature of the liquid state and its unpredictable play with light. It is a vehicle of transformation, calm and connection, rather like the sensation created by Buddhist prayer wheels.
