Accessibility and conditioning of the jetties for public use

Beaches

Barcelona’s beaches

Precontent

Despite the fact that it is currently forbidden for the general public to walk on the jetties, as per the Byelaw on measures to promote and guarantee citizen coexistence in Barcelona’s public spaces (Plenary Council Agreement of 23/12/2005), beach users continue to access them. In fact, according to data from the Guàrdia Urbana (Barcelona City Police), in 2017, some 9,000 people were removed from the jetties.

In 2016 a signage project was drawn up to improve “communication of the prohibition” against access to the jetties. During the study, it was found that the space had been intensively used and the initiative was taken to recover it by transforming and extending its function: by providing circulation, accessibility and safety elements to those jetties that, due to their morphology, were suitable for consolidation as spaces open to the public in a safe manner.
