Coastline Centre

Awareness-raising and environmental education

The entire coastline

Precontent

The Beach Centre is the municipal point of reference for environmental education and information about Barcelona’s coastline. It is the main facility in this area on the beaches; however, it is a temporary facility and very much focused on the bathing season, mainly aimed at beach users and largely unknown to the people of Barcelona. It has potential that should be better exploited in order to create a centre where citizens can find comprehensive information and activities related to the sea and the coast. To achieve this, it would be necessary to rescale the activity, scope, location and target public. This centre has to work as part of a network with other organisations whose work focuses on the sea and the coast in order to find synergies and promote the dissemination of activities and the promotion of the area. With this new approach, the name of the Beach Centre would be changed to the Coastal Centre.

The project aims to create a coastal centre. The actions to be carried out are as follows:

  • Study possible locations for Coastal Centre offices in order to improve their visibility.
  • Extend the service to all year round, not only during the bathing season, and for all ages.
  • Become the centre of reference, the “blue point” to centralise all the information on the city’s leisure, sports, cultural, educational and scientific offer in relation to the sea and the coast.
  • Develop a new communication plan to make Barcelona’s coastline and sea a visible and centralised area to facilitate citizen access.
  • Have a plan of activities that will allow the city to be informed of conferences, workshops, activities, talks, regattas, sporting events at sea and on beaches, concerts, routes, and so on.
  • Work as part of a network with coastal and maritime neighbourhood agents in order to facilitate citizen involvement and gather proposals to promote the continuous improvement of the centre and its activities.
  • Become an observatory of the health of the coastal ecosystem, in close collaboration with the Barcelona Public Health Agency, the ICM CSIC and universities.
