During the Second Republic, architects from the Group of Catalan Architects and Technicians for the Progress of Contemporary Architecture (GATCPAC) designed the Casa Bloc, a highly innovative social project made up of five housing blocks with a total of 207 units linked together in an S shape. This groundbreaking building is one of the most representative examples of rationalist architecture in Catalonia. It was highly innovative at a time when workers lived in makeshift housing on the outskirts of the city, as it offered this group functional, basic housing accommodations that were integrated into the city itself.
