Located on the edge of La Clota neighbourhood in the Horta-Guinardó district, the Pavelló de la República, currently a library, is a 1992 reconstruction of the Pavelló de la República built in Paris to represent Spain in the 1937 Exposition.
The architects commissioned to create the original building were Josep Lluís Sert and Luis Lacasa, and it was considered a great architectural achievement at the time due to its rationalist style, very much in line with the avant-garde movements of the era. It was also steeped in symbolism, taking a clear stance against the Civil War that was raging in Spain.
In 1992, architects Espinet and Ubach created an exact reconstruction using the same makeshift materials used in the 1930s and left the building just as it was then: a large, empty container with a marked path and hardly any walls. The compartments are separated by metal structures, glass on the first floor and fibre cement on the second.
