Department of Science and Universities
The Department of Science and Universities is the technical team in charge of managing the policies and initiatives related to Barcelona Science and Universities and carrying out the resulting actions.
With the aim of providing Barcelona City Council with the necessary tools for the deployment of the strategic plans and objectives set, the Department of Science and Universities was created on 1 October 2020, reporting to the Area Management of Culture, Education, Science and Community (see the municipal organisation chart).
The Department's mission is to work permanently on science and university policies, developing, among others, the Barcelona Science Plan 2020-23, gender and science policies and direct contact with the scientific and academic fabric of the city. It is also central to its task to continue the legacy of the work carried out by the Barcelona Science Programme, started in 2007 at the Barcelona Institute of Culture, promoting actions such as the City and Science Biennial, the Science Festival, Escolab and the Barcelona Citizen Science Office.
The Department of Science and Universities coordinates and works in direct contact with those departments and areas of the rest of the City Council that play an important role in promoting science policies. Areas such as education, culture, health, ecology, economy and social rights are present, thanks to the interdisciplinary impact of science. At the same time, this department participates in cross-cutting boards that work on subjects related to science, research centres and universities present in the city and its metropolitan region.
