The festival of architecture and public space is back

The fifth edition of the Architecture Week, with exhibitions, workshops, cinema, routes and debates opens.

From the 6th to the 16th of May, Barcelona is hosting a festival dedicated to architecture and urban space during the fifth edition of Barcelona Architecture Week 2021, which this year offers numerous activities in a hybrid edition, combining on-site events and online formats. For ten days, the event hosts a wide range of proposals related to architecture and urban space to stimulate reflection about the built environment of cities and their value through the dissemination of architectural culture, knowledge, experience and debate. The week includes a wide range of events throughout the city, including exhibitions, talks, cinema, presentations, workshops, routes, guided tours, and parties.

The Week is part of the New European Bauhaus, a creative and interdisciplinary initiative of the European Commission, which opens a meeting space to design future ways of life and talks about art, culture, social inclusion, science and technology in order to imagine and build a sustainable, inclusive and beautiful future for everyone.

Among the activities in this year’s program, the following stand out: Fundació Mies van der Rohe's series of on-site and online debates, the Arina Dähnic’s photographic exhibition, which takes place simultaneously in the Mies van der Rohe Pavilion and at CaixaForum Barcelona; and the Architecture Festivals in each district, organized by the Architects’ Association of Catalonia (COAC) with the architecture schools and the city’s residents ’associations. Other activities discover hidden spaces or debate on specific topics such as rationalist architecture, urban landscapes, vertical gardens and an intervention contest on partition walls.

Also included in the program is the Arqu [in] Film 2021, the Architecture Film Show, which will take place from the 12th to the 16th of May, and is organized by ARQUIN-FAD. As a novelty, in addition, and as part of the Week, the first edition of the BARQ Barcelona International Film Festival of Architecture takes place, the only international and competitive film festival of architecture and interior design in the country. The festival includes films that innovatively show current issues related to architecture such as urban activism, politics, economics, the environment, and access to housing. The BARQ has an on-site and online format accessible through the Filmin platform.

Barcelona Architecture Week is promoted by Barcelona City Council, the Architects’ Association of Catalonia (COAC), and the Fundació Mies van der Rohe, in collaboration with Barcelona Building Construmat and Arquinfad.
