A toxic waste scandal

DOCSBarcelona presents Arica, an investigative documentary about illegal dumping in Chile.

In the mid-1980s, a Swedish company irregularly dumped more than 20,000 tons of harmful waste in the city of Arica, Chile. Years later, health problems among the population in the area began to skyrocket. This could be the synopsis of a fiction film, but unfortunately it is a true story with catastrophic consequences. It is Arica, a documentary about health, environment, interests and a terrible event that should never have happened. During January, DOCSBarcelona will hold several screenings of the film in various venues around the city.

Lars Edman and William Johansson Kalén direct this piece, which focuses on the investigation that Edman (Chilean) is conducting a study on the company Boliden, responsible for the Arica oil spills, but also for the ecological disaster at Aznalcóllar (Spain) at the end of the last century. The audience will be able to see the director's journey during the 14 years of his investigation, travelling to Chile, meeting with relatives and victims of the spills, and interviewing personnel of the company, until he manages to gather enough evidence to file a lawsuit against the company, which for years had used its power to hide the scandal and evade responsibility.

The documentary was successfully screened at the IDFA Frontlight - International Documentary Film Festival in Amsterdam, the HUMAN International Documentary Film Festival in Norway and the Document Tempo International Film Festival in Sweden. In all of them, the film received highly positive reviews, highlighting its point of view about capitalism and the brilliant way in which the story is told.
