The Filmoteca brings together the best films of 2017

'Nocturnal Animals', 'La La Land' and 'Le fils de Jean' are among the films selected.

Did you fall in love with a film last year and feel like seeing it again? From 6 January, the Filmoteca de Catalunya is bringing together a selection of the best movies from 2017. Although the people behind this programme are the first to admit that comparisons are odious and the world of the cinema is not an athletic competition, everybody loves lists and for this one, a number of critics have put together a selection that includes titles such as The Lost City of Z, Forushande, Toivon tuolla Puolen and, of course, the best known and commercial of them all, La La Land.

The first feature film to be screened on both Wednesday 6 and Tuesday 9 January is Nocturnal Animals, the second incursion into movies by fashion designer Tom Ford. La La Land will be screened on 10 and 21 January and Le fils de Jean by Philippe Lioret can be seen on 11 and 17 January. Paterson by Jim Jarmusch will be screened on 13 and 14 January and Olivier Assayas’ Personal Shopper can be seen on 18 and 27 January. On 19 and 28 January the chosen film will be Toivon tuolla puolenby Aki Kaurismäki, while The Lost City of Z by James Gray will come to the Filmoteca screens on the 20 and 31 January. Although Vor der Morgenröte on 23 January and Forushande on 24 and 27 January will complete the month’s offering, the cycle will continue in February, though the Filmoteca has not yet published the program. We do, however, know that the critic’s favourite film, Summer 1993 by Carla Simón, will be among the films screened.
