The Liceu is bringing 'The Nutcracker' to families

The Ballet du Capitole is performing this magical masterpiece of classical ballet, directed by Kadar Belarbi.

The Nutcracker is an essential work in the history of classical ballet. It was composed by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky at the request of Ivan Vsevolojski, and since its premiere in St. Petersburg on 18 December 1892, it is usually performed around Christmas time.

It tells the story of a little girl, Maria, who receives a nutcracker in the shape of a soldier as a gift from her godfather on Christmas Eve. She adopts it as a toy, and that same morning, the figure comes to life and acquires a human appearance. In this fantasy world, the nutcracker becomes the prince of the toys, and Maria joins the party, which leads to a succession of dances.

Many of the play's works bear witness to a refined art, full of energy and formidable melodic freshness. They are all hymns that have passed into posterity, such as the Waltz of the Flowers, the Dance of the Reed Flutes, the March, the Russian Dance or "Trepak", the Arabian and Chinese Dances or the Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy.

Kedar Belarbi has injected new life into the original version created 130 years ago by Màrius Petipà. His proposal is inspired by the fantasy of the illusionist and film director Georges Méliès, who between 1896 and 1903 filmed nearly 500 commercials and films, preserving the magic of the Christmas story and portraying the paradise of children and their dreams.

The piece will be impeccably performed by the Ballet du Théâtre du Capitole de Tolousse de Llenguadoc and accompanied by the Chorus and Symphony Orchestra of the Gran Teatre del Liceu. Under the baton of Marius Stieghorst, the work deals with immortal themes such as love and the opposition between evil and beauty, enhanced by the magical sets of Antoine Fontaine and the sumptuous costumes of Philippe Guillotel.
