Still from the documentary The Pawnshop

The price of living in dignity

The documentary of the month of May is The Pawnshop, an emotional story full of love by the Polish Lukasz Kowalski.

A new month begins and that means that a new documentary proposed by DocsBarcelona will be circulating around the city. This time we have chosen The Pawnshop, a story about the price to pay to live with dignity, by the Polish director Lukasz Kowalski.

The film's synopsis describes Jola and Wiesiek, an eccentric business couple from Bytom, Poland, as the protagonists of this touching story, full of "crazy and bizarre humour". They own what is probably the largest pawnshop in Europe, but the closure of the mines and the growth of unemployment in the town is having a major impact on their business: local people are pawning more and more absurd and unused objects. The couple makes efforts to straighten out the situation, and the house eventually becomes an important centre of life for the local community. But the business is soon on the verge of insolvency, and Jola and Wiesiek's relationship is put to the test. The story shows how, in the face of impending disaster, creativity and strength know no bounds.

The first venue in Barcelona to host the screening will be the Cines Girona, on 4 May. The documentary will then be shown at the Esquerra de l'Eixample - Agustí Centelles Library (17/5), the Ateneu Fort Pienc Civic Centre (18/5), Lluïsos d'Horta (19/5), Teatre de Sarrià (21/5 and 29/5), the Vilapicina i la Torre Llobeta Library (23/5), La Casa Elizalde Cultural Centre (23/5) and the Sant Martí Auditorium (24/5).

The film will be screened in the original version with subtitles in Catalan and Spanish. For more information, click on the link.
