The MMB emotionally links the sea with the minors deprived of their freedom
A new exhibition gathers the works of young artists who tell, through art, stories about overcoming adversity.
Under the name Traspassant mars i murs. L'art com a salvavides, the Museu Maritim de Barcelona (MMB) is introducing an exhibition of social commitment that brings together the work of young artists who explore the concept of the sea as a space of freedom. The exhibition, which will be open until February 20, 2020, tells the story of these young artists, many of whom have crossed the Mediterranean by boat. The people visiting it will learn about the dangers they went through, the difficulties they have encountered in our country, and the importance of culture to achieve integration – both in the workplace and in society.
The exhibition is promoted by the SEBTA Foundation, a non-profit organisation that encourages artistic and cultural projects with social value for groups at risk of exclusion. The MMB is a great place to host it, as the sample reveals how the sea can be a synonym of freedom, adventure, life change and knowledge while it can, at the same time, be synonymous with borders and danger. The project, directed by Marcel·lí Antúnez, was carried out by the young people deprived of their freedom, who are in the Can Llupià Juvenile Justice Educational Centre. The participants painted a wall with the sea as the central theme, which symbolises the barrier it represented and which they had to cross. Hence the title of the exhibition.
You will find the exhibition in the foyer of the MMB. Find out more here.
