The FAD presents “Ruïnes modernes” (Modern ruins)
The exhibition is a photographic portrayal of the consequences of property speculation in Spain
The FAD begins its closing chapter in the venue on the Plaza dels Àngels with an exhibition titled Ruïnes modernes, a catalogue of luxury homes and complexes that were projected during the Spanish property boom and which remain unfinished.
The exhibition inaugurates the Week of Architecture, Arquinset 2013, and consists of photographs of abandoned construction sites with their original promotional slogans that promised bucolic lifestyles in sumptuous residences. The irony of the fictional concept of what these locations promised set against the reality of what they eventually became is portrayed through the contrast of photography and text.
The exhibition also portrays the environmental consequences of property speculation where projects such as castle-shaped, semi-detached residences and residential areas with landing strips for light aircraft are just some examples of the excessive lack of concern and over-confidence of the period.
The exhibition, curated by Julia Schulz-Dornburg, has previously visited Madrid, Berlin and Klagenfurt and will be the final exhibition to be displayed in the current headquarters of the FAD, which will soon be moving to the DHUB building on the Plaça de les Glòries.
