The Mercat de les Flors transforms itself into Ciutat Flamenco

From the 22nd to the 25th of May, the festival, organised in collaboration with the Taller de Músics, brings the ‘Carmen Amaya Year’ celebrations to a close

Universality, democracy and openness are the key words for this year’s Ciudad Flamenco. With this in mind, on Thursday the 22nd of May, Juan Carlos Lérida will offer an introductory flamenco workshop in which he will present the new flamenco sign-language glossary, created in collaboration with the design studios Avanti-Avanti. Later the same evening, Eva Yerbabuena will journey into the very essence of flamenco accompanied by guitarist Paco Jarana and three cantaores, or singers.

On Friday the 23rd, the dance company Increpación Danza will present their production Xxi, dj Dr. Batonga! will pay tribute to Carmen Amaya with Honor a quien honor merece and Esperanza Fernández, in collaboration with Pastora Galván, will perform Mi voz en tu palabra, a production based on the poetry and prose of José Saramago.

On Saturday the 24th, Sol Picó will present La piel del huevo te lo da, with Candela Peña and La Shica, the dance duet consisting of Sevillian Marco Vargas and Canadian Chloé Brûlé will perform Por casualidad and the legendary singer Maruja Garrido, much admired by Salvador Dalí in the 60s, will perform Rumba surreal accompanied by Chicuelo, Fuensanta "La Moneta" and Peret Reyes.

The festival will close on the 25th with the production Les trinxeres 1714 (The trenches of 1714), in which Pepe Martínez, accompanied by guitarist Juan Carlos Gómez, will give voice to a series of texts by Enric Palomar relating to the chaotic social structure of the time.

The complete programme, including ticket prices and performance times, can be consulted on the festival and Mercat de les Flors websites.
