Manipulation of Consciousness
Human psychic life depends on recognition and acceptance of the ego and its relations with its surroundings. But how does consciousness begin? What is its relationship with neurological processes? Is consciousness individual and impervious or can it be manipulated? Is it right to interfere with a person’s psychology? We discuss these questions with a neurologist, a psychobiologist and a specialist in bioethics.

The Enhanced Brain: Ally or Enemy of the Human Species?
For the neuroscientist Jean-Pierre Changeux, the brain is a perfect mirror of the evolutionary history of the human species. It is the body’s most complex organ and it functions by means of highly delicate trial-and-error mechanisms, which have enabled us to keep adapting to our surroundings. What, then, can we make of psychopharmacology and the new biotechnologies which seek to expand or heighten brain activity? Would the “enhanced” brain be an ally of humankind or might it become a problem?

An End to Aging?
Aubrey de Grey is emphatic in his view that, in the near future, regenerative medicine and the new biomedical technologies will let us defeat biological aging. But is it really possible to gain control over the molecular and cellular changes which cause the body’s deterioration? Will we still be humans if we manage to escape the contingencies of natural evolution? What if death is no longer an inevitable ending?
