An Oasis of Calm to Release Daily Tensions

The Magic Hour returns—an invitation to rediscover peace at the Monastery of Pedralbes.

The last time you visited the cloister of the Monastery of Pedralbes, probably on a weekend, you were likely struck by the peace and serenity it exudes. That atmosphere is a perfect antidote to stress and a wonderful reason to sit, reflect, or simply contemplate. Now, you have access to it twice a week in the late afternoon, after work or classes. Stress and hurry stay at the door.

The Magic Hour is a simple but powerful offering: all it asks for is your presence. It invites you to release the tensions of the day in a calm environment, as spiritual and inspiring as it is cool and refreshing during spring and summer evenings.

Every Tuesday and Friday, starting at 6 PM, the cloister doors open for free access. You must arrive before 8:30 PM (the site closes at 9 PM), and note that during this time, you will not be able to visit other parts of the monastery or exhibitions, as they will remain closed.

Still, the cloister—with its 700 years of history and the soothing sound of water—will likely provide the perfect setting to transition gently back to the real world after a long day in your own personal “Matrix.”

You'll also discover a monastery founded in 1327 by Queen Elisenda of Montcada (whose tomb, visible from the cloister, is a must-see), with the support of her husband, King James II. From its founding until 1983, the monastery was home to the Poor Clare nuns, the female branch of the Franciscan order.

Pedralbes (from “pedres albes” or “white stones”) is considered one of the great examples of Catalan Gothic architecture, and the three-level cloister is a masterpiece of elegance. Around the cloister, you’ll notice the doors to the day cells, where the nuns would retreat for quiet contemplation.

If you’re looking for a special moment, come experience The Magic Hour and treat yourself to some inner peace as you stroll through the cloister of the Monastery of Pedralbes.
