Alba Sotorra is bringing the day to day lives of former Islamic State women to the screen

The Return: Life After ISIS, the documentary for October, shows the cruelty, the abuse and the misogyny they have suffered.

As per usual, DocsBarcelona is bringing a shocking documentary to the screens. Throughout October, it will be available at different venues in Barcelona. The Reus director, Alba Sotorra, was granted exclusive access to the al-Roj camp in northeast Syria. She followed five women, who were former members of the Islamic State, for two years. The result of the material collected by Sotorra is The Return: Life After ISIS, a film that, premiered this year, shows the harsh reality of these women trapped by their past. The director elaborates a storyline without prejudices, and that, at the same time, makes apparent the need of establishing an honest and empathic dialogue between cultures, religions and genders. Additionally, the movie raises the question, suitable for the case reflected in the documentary as well as for many others: Does sincere remorse deserve a second chance?

The Return: Life After ISIS will be screened in V.O. with subtitles at Cinemes Girona on October 7, 20 and 21; at the Biblioteca Esquerra de l'Eixample - Agustí Centelles on October 13; at the Teatre de Sarrià on October 17 and 25; at Casa Elizalde on October 19; at the Auditori de Sant Martí on October 21; at the Lluïsos d’Horta on October 22; and at the Centre Cívic Ateneu Fort Pienc on October 28. On the other hand, the Biblioteca Vilapicina i Torre Llobeta and the Auditori Sant Martí offer online screenings during the second half of the month.
