‘Otello’, the sum of the geniuses Shakespeare and Verdi

Gustavo Dudamel directs the musical part of an opera produced by the Bayerische Staatsoper and featuring the voices of Gregory Kunde, Carlos Álvarez and Krassimira Stoyanova.

Two of the most universal names in the history of culture, those of William Shakespeare and Giuseppe Verdi, will coincide between March 27 and April 14 on the stage of the Gran Teatre del Liceu. On top of this, the baton will be carried by one of the most popular conductors of this century, Gustavo Dudamel, the stage direction is signed by Amélie Niermeyer, and among the performers will be Gregory Kunde, Carlos Álvarez and Krassimira Stoyanova. We are definitely in front of one of the great shows of the year in the Barcelona opera house. So, don’t get lazy if you want to get a place to see Otello, produced by the Bayerische Staatsoper.

Niermeyer has empowered the figure of Desdemona, emphasising the feminicide and misogyny of the story. Verdi, when composing his music, highlighted the character of Iago, attracted by his wickedness; in fact, for this reason, he even thought of naming it Iago, instead of Otello, and also because Gioachino Rossini, in 1816, had already turned Shakespeare's classic into an opera. Verdi's premiered at La Scala in Milan in 1887, and arrived at the Liceu for the first time on November 19, 1890. The last performance of Verdi's Otello at the Las Ramblas took place just five years ago.

With libretto by Arrigo Boito, the montage is a lyrical drama in four acts, and lasts just over three hours. You will find more information and how to buy tickets on this link.
