Still from ‘Kramer vs. Kramer’, which will be showing at Phenomena on 30 July.

Phenomena cinema hosts series of films from 1979

Alien, Life of Brian, Hair and Rocky II, some of the films showing now through 4 August.

Phenomena cinema is taking advantage of this heat to celebrate the fact that loads of great films came out in 1979. Now through 4 August, the Feliços 40 (Happy 40th) series is bringing back loads of films that are turning forty this year. The selection shows that the films that came out the last year of the 1970s have not only gone down in history but were also extremely varied.

So, the series includes Woody Allen’s sharp humour in Manhattan and the irreverent humour of Monty Python in Life of Brian, as well as musicals like Hair and All That Jazz. Action films like Rocky II; a good handful of horror films including Alien, Nosferatu the Vampyre and The Amityville Horror; and films that jump from one end of space to another as if it were just around the corner, like Star Trek: The Motion Picture and Buck Rogers in the 25th Century. If you like period pieces, go see Tess, by Roman Polanski, and if you prefer science fiction, you can opt for Stalker or Mad Max. If you tend to agree with the criteria of the Hollywood Academy, go for a sure thing with Kramer vs. Kramer starring Meryl Streep and Dustin Hoffman.
