“A simple vista” (At a glance), in the Virreina

From the 5th of December to the 16th of March, an exhibition on contemporary visual culture in Barcelona presents works by renowned authors

The Virreina Image Centre presents an exhibition focussing on the photographic visual culture of Barcelona over the past decade. Rather than being a canon, solution, or merely a recompilation of recent images, A cop d'ull. Cultura visual fotogràfica recente en Barcelona can be seen as an attempt to open a debate on the visual identity of the city.

Curated by Alex Brahim and Manuel Segade, the exhibition is structured by subject, and by employing a variety of genres (urban photography, fashion, contemporary art, film techniques, portraits, and photojournalism) and diverse media (analogue and digital photography, image mounting, slideshow…) the exhibition covers works by both historically acclaimed photographers as well as artists from recent generations.
A cop d'ull, then, includes examples of the social uses of photography in the production of the collective imaginaries that constitute the visual culture of Barcelona and offers works by both internationally recognised Catalan photographers as well as those who capture the current day-to-day life of the city in the local media. In short, an exhibition which is both a choral portrait of the city and an attempt to encourage debate on contemporary photography in Barcelona.
