A scene from 'M. Butterfly'

A double screening of David Cronenberg's 'M. Butterfly' at the Filmoteca

The film premiered in 1993 and starred Jeremy Irons, John Lone, Barbara Sukowa and Ian Richardson.

As part of their For the Love of the Arts cycle, the Filmoteca de Catalunya is screening M. Butterfly, a film that has just celebrated the 25th anniversary of its premiere. The screenings are scheduled for 5 pm on 15 January  and 7 pm on 20 January in an English language version subtitled in Catalan.

Directed by David Cronenberg with a screenplay by David Henry Hwang, the title of the film refers to Giacomo Puccini’s Madame Butterfly. It’s the story, based on real-life events, of a French diplomat sent on a mission to China in the 1960s who falls passionately in love with an opera singer. Fascinating and mysterious, the diva is hiding a dark secret. In the words of the Filmoteca, "the film combines the music of Puccini with Cronenberg’s organic obsessions". The cast of the film included Jeremy Irons, John Lone, Barbara Sukowa, Ian Richardson and Annabel Leventon.

The screenings are programmed in collaboration with the Gran Teatre del Liceu, where the opera Madame Butterfly is scheduled to run from 12 to 29 January. The screening on 15 January will be preceded by a presentation by the musicologist and opera critic Pol Avinyó. Additional information is available at the following link.
