‘UDJAT. The exoticism of Ancient Egypt in Barcelona’, new temporary exhibition at the MUEC

Barcelona society, enchanted by the Ancient Egypt

The Museu Etnològic i de Cultures del Món opens the third exhibition of ‘Uncomfortable Memory’.

The ‘Memoria Incómoda’ room of the Museu Etnològic i de Cultures del Món is a space that explores history and becomes a point of reflection on those controversial or conflicting moments. They will inaugurate the third part of this project on January 29, ‘UDJAT. The exoticism of Ancient Egypt in Barcelona’, which focuses on the repercussions and influence that Ancient Egypt had on Barcelona society, especially during the nineteenth century, when The West devoted itself to reproducing elements of this culture. You can visit the exhibition at the museum’s Montcada headquarters until June 15.

Although the remaining material samples of this influence in Barcelona are not as numerous as in other parts of Europe, the exhibition preserves some of the vestiges of the city’s artistic and architectural panorama that you can admire. Highlights include, for example, original pieces from Aida's performance at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in 1877 or the tenor Francesc Viñas' costume for the same opera, but from 1907. You will also find a large selection of images, plans and engravings from the period donated by the Arxiu Històric de la Ciutat de Barcelona, the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando and the museu Egipci de Barcelona.

You can visit the exhibition during museum hours, from Tuesday to Sunday, as well as on public holidays. To access, you have two types of ticket: either with the ticket to the temporary exhibition for 3 euros, or with the general ticket, which also gives access to the permanent exhibition, for 5 euros. You will find all the information here.
