Bringing the imaginary to life. The art of creating fantasy with images
Fantasy genres are a real treat for artists, an opportunity to bring anything from mythological creatures to new worlds to life through maximum creativity. And they work well in all artistic styles, because anything is possible in fantasy genres. Veteran artist Manuel Sanjulián makes pencil and oil paintings for covers of magazines and books, and has also illustrated the iconic series Vampirella and Conan the Barbarian. Meanwhile, Ciruelo Cabral – a regular at the 42 Festival – specialises in dragons, painting them with oil on canvas, and has exported his work all over the world on book covers, Magic: The Gathering cards and posters, among other formats. Also participating will be art dealer Sergio Rincón, who has devoted his work to promoting the ‘art of entertainment’, which connects pop art with contemporary visual culture, and has collaborated with more than 100 comic, animation and fantasy artists. All of them, from their own unique positions, have demonstrated how wonderful it is to illustrate fantasy literature, as they will discuss during this round table moderated by the assistant curator of the 42 Festival, Susana Vallejo.
