Emma Ríos and Nadia Hafid: Socially engaged comics with a unique style
In a world of comics that is still heavily male-dominated, the authors Emma Ríos and Nadia Hafid have shown us how to succeed, by breaking away from graphic conventions and creating a unique style for telling their stories. Ríos, from Galicia, has been nominated for the Eisner Awards on several occasions, thanks to her daring combination of fantasy with an intimist style. The Catalan artist Hafid, whose work features a geometric style and expressive use of colour, has been nominated for the Còmic Barcelona Awards and won the Finestres Award for Best Comic in Catalan. Both authors’ stories also engage with social causes: Ríos has explored identity, gender and death, while Hafid has approached themes such as immigration, racism, vulnerability and mental health. Their latest releases are faithful to their values and career thus far. Ríos is presenting Anzuelo (Astiberri) and Hafid, Mala olor (Finestres). They will talk about their artistic activism with Gemma Domingo, director of the Ignasi Iglésias - Can Fabra Library, which has a dedicated comic collection.
