W.W. (We Women)

What does being a woman mean to you? The choreographer Sol Picó asked this question to women from half-way around the planet, and they answered her by dancing, making music or filming a video to describe the female condition in the twenty-first century.

Intimate, intercultural, artistic... That is the type of meetings that Sol Picó had with the women who accompany her in this show. In her previous works, the artist had already explored issues about the world of women, but she now takes a more direct approach to the theme. To this end, she asked a number of artists from such different countries as India, Benin and Japan to think, from their different standpoints, about identity and gender barriers. The whole initiative forms part of a collaborative project about women and their situation in the world today. The participants use different techniques and languages that, though the other women may not understand them, serve to pose the same questions: Why is women’s contribution to art so easily forgotten, and why does their legacy disappear? What is our experience of the clash between tradition and modernity? How is it possible, in the twenty-first century, that there continue to exist traditions which permit the abuse of women?
