Thoreau: La vida als boscos

Carlos Cuevas / Glòria Balañà

Jardí Botànic de Barcelona

July 23 and 24

Actor Carlos Cuevas stars in a dramatised reading based on one of the best-known works of the 19th-century American thinker David Thoreau, Walden, or Life in the Woods, but also on another popular work, Walking. Author Marina Espasa adapts a combination of texts from both works to bring us closer to the thinking of an author who, in defining the relationship between humans and nature, has had a significant influence on the beatnik Generation and also on the view of environmentalism in the 21st century.

The reading (in collaboration with the Festival Clàssics, which first staged it last season) is performed by actor Carlos Cuevas, known for his roles in Catalan series such as Vendelplà and Merlí, and who has also acted at the TNC as well as in other venues. In 2024, we saw him in Jauría, based on the case of the gang rape at the running of the bulls in Pamplona, and this same year he acted in L’herència [the Catalan adaptation of Matthew López’s The Inheritance] at Teatre Lliure, one of the major hits of the season. He also studied literature at the University of Barcelona. The text he will read has been adapted by philologist, writer, screenwriter, translator, and cultural journalist Marina Espasa, and the project is directed by Glòria Balañà, a stage director and playwright. At the Grec Festival, she has directed shows such as Victoria Szpunberg’s Boys Don’t Cry (Grec 2012) and Sadurní Vergés’s Els ossos de Montaigne [Montaigne’s Bones] (Grec 2022). This year, she is also directing Decadència [Decadence] at the Sala Àtrium as part of the Grec Festival.

A co-production by Festival Clàssics and Temporada Alta
