Barcelona schools draw the city
The Escola Baixeras and the Escola del Mar both turned a hundred in 2022. To mark the occasion, they invited all children in their fifth year of primary school at publicly operated schools in the city to take part in a competition to draw the city. The goal was to stand up for the everyday activity in public spaces through the eyes of children. The hundred drawings that made the final are included in an illustrated publication in the “Quadrens de Viatge” collection and can also be seen in an online repository.Pupils had to draw iconic spaces such as monuments, green areas or buildings near to each participating school and use sketching techniques, a medium within everybody’s reach and ideal for highlighting the everyday use of public space.
Organised in coordination with the Education Consortium, the competition began in March last year and the drawings were submitted in June. Around 700 pupils took part, from 19 publicly operated schools in the city.
A jury made up of people from the world of art, education and publishing chose the best hundred drawings, from which the ten winners were selected (one in each district). All the drawings can be found on this website.
