Seventy-five million euros in EU funding to drive environmental quality and sustainable mobility

The subsidy call for 2021 by the Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda (MITMA) has awarded the full 75 million euros requested to drive key projects in the city, the focus being on improving environmental quality and mobility to tackle the climate emergency. The call falls under the State Plan for Recovery, Transformation and Resilience, within the sphere of EU action on resilience and transformation.

Besides the Barcelona Superblock, the main budgetary item by far as it accounts for a third of the overall budget, and the Low Emission Zone (ZBE), the budget will used for the following:

  • Acquisition of electric buses. The first request for funding includes the purchase of 74 electric buses (54 vehicles of 12 metres and 20 vehicles of 18 metres). This will account for 21% of the overall budget.
  • Bike lanes. Funds are being awarded for sixteen projects to create bike lanes.
  • Ciutat 30. To ensure compliance with speed limits, the City Council will be using funding to install speed cameras around the city, including areas around schools, and updating the traffic light system and improving signage.
  • Transformation of Av. Meridiana. This is the process to convert the avenue into a key civic axis, with more recreational space and urban furniture and less traffic.
  • Vertical accessibility. Funding has been allocated for six projects for escalators.
  • Digitalisation of mobility services. Work will continue on an app which brings together metropolitan mobility services and improves user experience, facilitating information, planning, bookings and payments for travel.

Subsidies in line with the city model

Presented by the municipal government last September, this first package of projects to transform public space and mobility is in line with the city model currently being developed. This model puts people’s health at the centre through key actions on mobility and the climate emergency which fit in with the requisites of this subsidy programme.

A second request involves various projects and seeks overall funding of fifty million euros. This may be taken into account if the first requests made by municipalities do not use up the full budget available from the MITMA.
