El Liceu lifts the curtain for new creators

The ‘Òh!pera’ project premieres four newly created operas in different spaces at El Liceu. Conducted in collaboration with the Disseny Hub Barcelona and design schools in the city, the project allows students from these schools to work in different design disciplines through the experience of creating a real opera from scratch. The four mini operas (lasting around 30 minutes) can be seen in a single function on 5, 6 and 9 (two functions) July.

The resident artist at the Gran Teatre del Liceu, Àlex Ollé, is the artistic director for the project, which presents four mini operas by the composers Andreu Gallén, Carlos de Castellarnau, Marian Márquez and Itziar Viloria. The works were chosen within the context of Barcelona Creació Sonora, by the ICUB, a programme whose participants include the stage directors Israel Solà, Cristina Cubells, Bàrbara Mestanza Peña and Jordi Oriol

The titles of the newly created operas are: Nala, Hi ha monstres que viuen per la seva curiositat, Filles del món and In the beginning everything was white. The initiative provides a major showcase for emerging talent in the city, promoting it at an international level.

Students on degree and master’s degree courses in different disciplines at the Escola Superior de Disseny i d’Arts Plàstiques de Catalunya (ESDAPC), the Escola Superior de Disseny (ESDI), LCI Barcelona and IED Barcelona worked on aspects such as the design of stage sets, wardrobes, lighting and audiovisuals.
