How will waste collections and loading/unloading work in the new green streets?

The City Council launches an information campaign for shops and businesses in the new green streets of Consell de Cent, Rocafort, Comte Borrell and Girona, explaining how waste collections will work from now on and the urban goods distribution (DUM) system, popularly known as loading and unloading areas.

Work on the new green streets in L’Eixample has almost been completed, meaning it’s time to reactivate the services which were disrupted while the work was in progress. A team of information staff started visiting all the shops and businesses in these streets on Monday and will continue until 30 June, ensuring that establishment and retailers receive information directly, and clearing up any doubts they might have.

Commercial waste collection

Regarding commercial selective waste, information staff will be explaining how this service works in traffic-calmed streets. Notable new aspects to the service include the door-to-door collection of cardboard from commercial premises every day of the week. The staff also explain how to properly separate other waste categories and where to dispose of them, as well as the existing regulations on preventing waste at commercial establishments.

Loading and unloading, in line from 9.30 am to 4 pm

The biggest change affects urban goods distribution (DUM). Signage is currently being installed in all the green streets to explain the new system, which is similar to the one in place and working well in the Sant Antoni Superblock. Now all commercial vehicles will be able to load and unload in the central section of green streets (not on the corners) and in a line (in single file, on one side of the street , leaving enough space for the rest of vehicles to continue to go past). In addition, loading and unloading will only be allowed during the following hours:

  • Mondays to Fridays, from 9.30 am to 4 pm.
  • For a maximum of 30 minutes.
  • Loading and unloading operations must be validated using the SPRO app.

Outside of these hours, providers and retailers can use DUM area spaces in streets close to green streets, where loading and unloading hours are from 8 am to 8 pm, or distribute goods with bicycles, cargo bikes or on foot.

New containers from July

At the same time, containers for the various waste categories will be placed back in these streets from early July and gradually positioned over the space of two weeks. The Cuidem Barcelona team will also be providing information for local people in green streets, with a poster in the doorways of residential buildings a few days before the new containers are installed.
