Canopée is a space that immerses us in the depths of the forest, inviting us to embrace slowness, silence, introspection, and absolute reflection. The foyer of the Teatre Nacional de Catalunya is transformed into a mysterious grove that connects us with our senses through the light filtered by the forest canopy, the humid and botanical scents, and the sounds of animals living together in an ecosystem that seems isolated from time.  The forest and the tree have been, for virtually all cultures, a symbolic and sacred representation of another reality: the tree as an image of the world in expansion, concentration, and ascension, and the forest as a refuge—outside the inhabited enclosures of consciousness—for magical creatures, elves, witches, monsters, and fairies. They are also a representation of our imagination and the inspiration of artists like Bosch, Shakespeare, Brueghel, Kiefer, and Klimt. The forest is an environmental and emotional sanctuary, now fragile and threatened by the climate crisis.

Tarragona-born designer Antoni Arola has had his own design studio in Barcelona since 1994. His artistic research revolves around the absence and presence of light in natural and artificial forms. Through this dialogue—and its interaction with space—he appeals to the viewer’s visual perception, inviting us to immerse ourselves in a new world: intangible, poetic, and always open to new interpretations. His work responds to the eternal quest for beauty. Intuitive and permeable to chance, it is fundamentally inspired by ancestral cultures, digital codes, and serendipitous encounters. The method is play and the principle is to use as few elements as possible. Beyond light and space, colour is another of his constants.

He is the creator of lamps and light projects, object designs, furniture, interior designs, and ephemeral installations, earning him accolades such as Catalonia’s National Design Award 2003, the Delta de Plata on four occasions, and the Red Dot Design Award in 2012.  He combines industrial design projects with artistic practice and teaching.
