Precontent

From almost its very beginning, the Portal de la Pau building has served as the representative headquarters of the Port of Barcelona’s governing body. Its architectural uniqueness, its strategic position in the city and the port, as well as the large number of people who pass through the Moll de les Drassanes every year give it great potential for carrying out activities that allow the public to enjoy the building and further open up the port to the city. Therefore, the aim is to give the building a fundamentally cultural character in addition to the administrative one it already has, and to make it an area where it can be explained that the Port of Barcelona is not just an infrastructure. It can also be a key element for other initiatives and activities that take place in the surrounding area, linked in some way to port activity in a broader sense.

A complete restoration of the building is planned, including the repair of the façade elements and the restoration of the interior distribution into an open space distributed on a single floor. In this way, the original layout will be restored, with a central hall of some 400 square metres covered by a large central vault. The project also foresees the transformation of the parking area located at the corner of the building with the idea of reducing the number of spaces, so that it integrates better with the Moll de Fusta.

With this reconversion, the new Port Centre will be a space that is open to the public and provides information about the history of the port, its role as an economic force for the city, and the ins and outs of port life. It will also be a corporate instrument for the promotion of the port, both nationally and internationally, similar to the centres that the main ports of the world have to publicly explain their current situation and their projects.
