The Citizen Science in Schools program is once again the starting signal for the Science Festival (Festa de la Ciència) for the second consecutive year. Participation in this initiative, organized by the Citizen Science Office of Barcelona City Council, is growing year after year, as indicated by the figures in the latest 2023-2024 report. The closing ceremony on Friday morning featured a representation of the more than 600 students and 17 educational centers who have divided their work into 8 participatory research projects, which, among others, have focused on the seasonal changes of plants and animals, the impact of smells or sounds on spaces, the hydrological and ecological state of the Besòs river, or the presence of microplastics on the beach.

During the event, prior to the start of the Science Festival, the students shared their work and the various experiences and results obtained. The research staff involved, responsible for transmitting the knowledge to teachers and students, later commented on all the work. Finally, the different centers were awarded diplomas that reward and accredit their participation.

The day also had an institutional presence. Anna Bröll, head of the Department of Science and Innovation, gave the opening speech.

 Citizen Science in Schools

The Citizen Science in Schools program is one of two promoted by the Office of Citizen Science, along with Citizen Science in Neighborhoods. The initiative, launched in 2017, promotes the participation of the educational community in participatory research projects. It puts teachers and students in contact with different researchers to raise their awareness of the importance of taking an active part and also having a critical spirit when faced with specific challenges. The objective is to connect this entire world of research with schools so that they can enter this world, understand more concepts about natural sciences and undertake dissemination and awareness-raising actions with their closest environment.

Over the course of 8 editions, the program has reached a total of 129 educational centers and around 4,000 students. Students and teachers have been able to train and practice specific research methods, data analysis and also the conclusions that have been derived from the results.
