The new facilities, with 24,000 square metres of space, will provide a home for more than 700 researchers and 45 research groups in the fields of maths, IT, economic and health, at two locations:

  • At the Campus Diagonal, between the streets of Joan Obiols and John M. Keynes, with the construction of a new building of 14,000 m2 as the new headquarters of the Faculty of Mathematics and Information Technology, which will move out of the university’s historical building. The new premises will also house the various economic research groups from the Faculty of Economics and Business.
  • The Barcelona Science Park will grow with a new building of 10,000 m2 at the Campus Sud, which will be the headquarters of the Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia (IBEC) and other UB research groups in the field of health sciences.

Work on the buildings is expected to be completed in 2028.

The agreement sees Barcelona City Council undertake to facilitate the procedure for different urban instruments and planning, making it possible to construct the buildings. In particular, this means the plots of land used, the necessary planning and issue of corresponding permits.

For its part, the Government of Catalonia, through the Ministry for Research and Universities and the Ministry for Territory, through INCASOL, will take responsibility for constructing the buildings in exchange for rents, to be paid by the university itself or the organisations that are finally housed in the new spaces.
