Barcelona, Barcelona, a model in citizen science
The Bee-Path project by Oficina de Ciència Ciutadana in Barcelona has been chosen to be presented at the first International Citizen Science Conference held in San Jose, California.
This week has been held in San Jose, California, the first International Citizen Science Conference. Over 600 people from 25 countries have gathered for two days of building connections and exchanging ideas across a wide spectrum of disciplines and experiences.
The Bee-Path project by OpenSystems research group at Universitat de Barcelona, part of the Oficina de Ciència Ciutadana in Barcelona, has been selected for presentation in the session Tackling Grand Challenges and Everyday Problems with Citizen Science.” Presenting a project by Oficina de Ciència Ciutadana at this conference shows that citizen science is really alive in Barcelon and we can compete internationally”, says Isabelle Bonhoure, Project Manager in OpenSystems.
Oficina de Ciència Ciutadana by Barcelona Lab is a research platform that is willing to democratize science, involving citizens in preparation and the choice of research areas. Oficina de Ciència Ciutadana supports seven projects, in addition to Bee-Path there are also projects like Abelles urbanes, AtrapaelTigre.com, Observadors del Mar, El Punt d’Informació Aerobiològica, Space Mapper o Riu.net.
With the willing to encourage citizen science in the area, Oficina de Ciència Ciutadana in collaboration with Generalitat de Catalunya, Recerca en Acció, Jaume Vives University Network, UOC, Alcoi and Vila-Real city councils and El Temps magazine organize for first time the Citizen Science Awards. Projects can be signed up from February 4 to April 16 and win the award for the best citizen science project idea or for the best citizen science project in progress or completed.
