Biennial of Thought

The Biennial of Thought unveils its programme of activities in Barcelona

The event will fill the streets and squares with dialogue and shared reflection, and will also be extended to the cities of Palma and Valencia.

Adam Przeworski, Antonio Damasio, Yuval Noah Harari, Carla Simón, George Monbiot, Carolyn Steel, Carles Boix, Chantal Mouffe, Alice Munyua, Renata Ávila, Nnenna Nwakanma, Carolin Emcke and Svetlana Aleksiévich are some of the almost 200 names of the third Biennial of Thought, which will be held in Barcelona from 11 to 16 October. The great citizens' event for dialogue and shared reflection on society's main challenges is returning to Barcelona, but as a novelty, this year it will also be held in Palma and Valencia, with their own but interrelated programmes in the three cities.

The debates of the Biennial of Thought revolve around three major themes: the socio-political system, technological change and the physical configuration of cities. Thus, post-colonialism, digital rights, de-globalisation, science and obedience, climate change and technology, opinion and democracy, cryptocurrencies and NFTs, democracy and neoliberalism, the meaning of the family, biotechnology, the reality of Europe, linguistic diversity and minority languages, whistleblowing and democratic health, and artificial intelligence are some of the topics that will be addressed in the more than 60 activities of this edition.

The Biennial's main mission is to bring the debate into the public space and to encourage participation by all citizens. In order to reach all audiences, there will be programming on both public holidays and working days and the informative and artistic activities will take place in spaces in different districts, following a decentralised logic: Plaça Joan Coromines, Canòdrom, La Model, Editorial Gustau Gili, Can Felipa, Pati de les Dones and Sala Raval of the CCCB, the headquarters of the COAC, Plaça Reial, Plaça del Diamant, Plaça dels Dones del 36, and Plaça de la Virreina.

The programme of this Biennial has been configured by an advisory board made up of the CCCB, the architect and musician Núria Moliner, the architect Josep Ferrando, the digital innovation expert Liliana Arroyo, the professor of Political Science Ignacio Sánchez-Cuenca, the writer and Hellenist Raül Garrigasait and the journalist Ángela Precht.

In addition, as in previous editions, the +Biennial will be added to the set of proposals and spaces, as a result of the alliances forged with entities and institutions that promote critical thinking through their daily activities. Thus, the art, creation and thought centres that have decided to join the event during the days it is held organise the activities of the +Biennial section, which expands the network of spaces and the scope of this edition.

As for the relationship with Palma and Valencia, this Biennial will have a marked Mediterranean perspective, as a result of the desire for cooperation between the cities to highlight the value of what unites them, based on the particularities and idiosyncrasies of each one. Within this framework, on 15 October, the recital Fuster, Ferrater, Bonet: canon in three voices will be held simultaneously in the three cities. Likewise, the Barcelona programme will also be related to the other capitals in different ways, for example with a nod to Valencian literature with sessions on Fuster or by sharing participants with the Palma sessions, such as Adam Przeworski and Sofi Oksanen.
