Debates at home

The CCCB presents five ongoing online debates in the context of a pandemic.

This July, the CCCB has programmed five online talks that are part of the cycle Debates at Home, an initiative that began during the confinement. On the occasion of Orwell Day some controversial topics will be discussed, such as digital surveillance and the influence of this writer on contemporary culture. In addition, two other debates will discuss the future of cities and society, and a fifth one will be devoted to the discovery of some icons of culture present in current video games.

As part of the Orwell Day celebrations on 1 July, journalists Marta Peirano and Peter Pomerantsev will talk about Technology, Digital Surveillance and Misinformation and how, during the pandemic, governments have been considering using these tools to monitor the spread of covid-19 by controlling the society. Likewise, on 2 July, cultural journalist Dorian Lynskey will talk to writer Jordi Puntí about the influence and The Present Relevance of 1984 on the contemporary cultural imaginary and its impact on new generations.

Outside the framework of the Orwell Day celebration, two debates focus on what will come after what the world is experiencing right now. Firstly, on 8 July, the philosopher and journalist Carolin Emcke and the writer and photographer Teju Cuelo will make us Imagine the Future through their personal and professional experiences, which will allow them to reflect on the complexity of society and major issues of today such as fanaticism and racism, without forgetting the political, social and psychological implications of the pandemic. Secondly, on 15 July, the anthropologist Teresa Caldeira will talk to Judit Carrera, director of the CCCB, about The Future of Cities and the challenges they face due to a scenario that is being drawn by the covid-19, such as spatial segregation, urban violence and social discrimination.

And on 22 July, another conversation invites the audience to a Personal Genealogy of the Video game by the writer and journalist Lucía Lijtmaer and Jordi Costa, head of exhibitions at the CCCB. In the talk, which is part of the Gameplay exhibition and has been extended at the CCCB until the end of August, Lijtmaer will talk about the cultural and social references on which her relationship with video games is based.
