'Erritu', an ode to individual and collective rituals

The Kukai Dantza Company and the choreographer Sharon Fridman add their signature to this show that will run for only three days in the Mercat de les Flors.

Jon Maya Sein founded the Kukai Dantza Company in 2001. In 2017, in recognition of his career, he was awarded the Spanish Premio Nacional de Danza (National Dance Prize), which was added to the long list of other prizes that he had already won for different shows. Some time ago, Maya, the company’s artistic director, asked the Israeli choreographer resident in Madrid, Sharon Fridman, if he would like to work together on a project. The result was Erritu, the production that Kukai Dantza will perform for only three days in the Mercat de les Flors - Casa de la Dansa, from 21 - 23 February. In the words of its creators, it is a ‘vital journey that uses individual and collective rituals to travel through the different stages of life in relation with nature and the community, such as birth and chaos, to then pass through solitude until reaching the first meeting, love and, finally, death".

If you decide to go, not only will you see the dancers Alain Maya, Eneko Gil, Ibon Huarte, Izar Aizpuru, Nerea Vesga and Urko Mitxelena on stage, but also the singer David Azurza and the Girls’ Choir of the Orfeó Català, who will perform the music composed by Azurza himself and Luis Miguel Cobo that will accompany the dancers’ movements. In 2019, Fridman’s choreography received a Max Award. In relation to the work, Jon Maya says, ‘I always think of these dances, songs, spaces... that fill you with emotion when you see, feel or breathe. Rituals that have always existed, and we don’t really know when they began, but they prevail among us here and now. And they always make us feel emotions’.
