Picasso, twice celebrated

In 2023, various activities will commemorate the sixtieth anniversary of the artist's death and the 60th anniversary of the inauguration of the museum in Barcelona that bears his name.

Pablo Ruiz Picasso, as is well known, is one of the most important and influential artists of all time. This year marks the 50th anniversary of his death - on 8 April- and it is for this reason that the governments of Spain and France have agreed to work together to celebrate his work and artistic legacy through a programme of activities of international scope, under the name "Celebration Picasso 1973-2023". The Musée National Picasso-Paris from France and the National Commission for the Commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the death of Pablo Picasso in Spain are the promoters, and more than forty exhibition projects and two academic congresses are planned. In Barcelona, the commemoration will be experienced in a special way, not only because of the artist's strong links with the Catalan capital, but also because 2023 will be the 60th anniversary of the inauguration of the Picasso Museum in Barcelona, and therefore there is even more reason to celebrate.

In fact, the temporary exhibition that has been on view at the Picasso since last December, Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler. Dealer and Publisher, open until 19 March, is already part of the "Picasso Celebration 1973-2023". Another exhibition, also part of the programme, will arrive in autumn and will be very special: the Fundació Joan Miró and the Picasso Museum will simultaneously host the Miró-Picasso exhibition at both venues, which will have as its main threads the friendship between the two artists and their artistic coincidences and divergences. The Barcelona painter and sculptor will also be remembered in 2023 on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of his death. What's more, 23 December will mark a century since the birth of Antoni Tàpies, and Barcelona City Council, with the support of the Generalitat de Catalunya, will organise the "Picasso-Miró-Tàpies Tri-commemoration”.

Returning to the Picasso celebration, the Picasso Museum, Barcelona City Council and Editorial Tenov will present Cartografia Picasso. Barcelona, a publication that will provide a global reading of the Picasso-Barcelona relationship based on the territory. The commemoration will be extended to different parts of the city: Barcelona Libraries and the Municipal Institute of Social Services will be programming events based on the theatre, poetry and art of Picasso, and the Filmoteca de Catalunya has digitised five films that will be screened accompanied by talks on the Malaga-born artist. For its part, the Palau de la Música will be organising concerts with Picasso as the central theme, and the Architects' Association of Catalonia will be showing the exhibition Picasso, Urbanism and the Synthesis of the Arts. The Design Museum will be showing The Will of Picasso. The ceramics that inspired the artist. The Picasso Museum and the National Art Museum of Catalonia will schedule an international seminar to explore the current role of archiving in contemporary art.
