The best pictures of the World Press Photo 2021 in Barcelona

The CCCB is showcasing the photographs and multimedia pieces awarded at the world's photojournalism contest.

From November 11 to December 12, the Photographic Social Vision foundation is promoting, for the 17th time, the world's most prestigious photojournalism exhibition at the Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona (CCCB), which gathers the winning works of the photography and digital narrative contest World Press Photo. Among the winners we find the Barcelona photographer Luis Tato with the picture Fighting Locust Invasion in East Africa and the Argentinian Pablo Tosco with Yemen: Hunger, Another War Wound.

World Press Photo Foundation is an independent non-profit organisation founded in 1955 in the Netherlands to support and promote the work of photojournalists. Over time, the Foundation and its annual awards have become an essential platform for photojournalism and the free exchange of information outside official channels.

The exhibition introduces all photographs and multimedia pieces — the majority unpublished in our country — that have won awards for their visual quality and capture the global reality of 2020 from different perspectives. In addition to the effects of the pandemic, the images show many other realities – from the intimacy of gender issues or global citizen protests to the consequences of war and environmental emergencies.

Apart from stimulating analysis and visual education through a critical eye, the contest contextualises the winning projects as a way to understand the world. It also vindicates the social function of photojournalism as a tool for transformation in order to achieve healthier democratic societies.

In the case of Barcelona, the exhibition itself will be complemented with a parallel activity programme, which will encourage public debate and the exploration of the themes of the winning images in greater depth, with guided visits and online tours through Filmin (free for the platform subscribers, and with the possibility to rent for those who aren't).

The guided tours last an hour and fifteen minutes and alternate days and times in Catalan (Wednesdays at 6pm, Fridays at 3pm and Saturdays at 1pm) and in Spanish (Tuesdays at 3pm, Thursdays at 6pm and Sundays at 1pm). The price for the visits (8,5 euros) is more expensive on the weekend (9 euros) and depends on the type of visit (in person or online) and the possible reductions you might be eligible for.

General admission is 6 euros, while the reduced price, 4 euros, is available for those who are retired, under 25 years old, have the Carnet de Biblioteques, or are part of a large or single-parent family. Entry is free for the unemployed, teachers, pensioners, disabled, Tarjeta Rosa holders, and under 12s.

To do the tour at the desired time, we recommend you choose the time slot and get the tickets through this link. There will also be a limited number of tickets on sale at the CCCB ticket offices.
