Total number of nursery schools in municipal network to reach 105

Four new schools will open in the 2023-2024 school year: Trinitat Nova and Can Rosés in Les Corts, which will join two that are already under construction; Pere Calafell, in Sant Martí; and la Teixonera, in Horta-Guinardó. The four schools, which together represent an investment of nearly €11 million, will expand the municipal network to a total of 105 public nurseries with 8,884 places. Furthermore, work is under way on seven additional projects to expand or build new schools in the medium and long term.

Work on the Trinitat Nova nursery school is already in progress on the ground floor of a new public housing building at C/Palamós, 70. An existing nursery school that will move to this new location will increase the number of groups from two to seven and extend its timetable to match the rest of schools in the network. The new space is approximately 872 square metres in area and has a budget of €2.2 million.

The other nursery school will be located in the former Can Rosés farmhouse in the Les Corts neighbourhood, where work has begun in the past few days. The plan is to restore and expand the building, which has three storeys and a total area of 1,000 square metres. Expected investment in the project is €1.2 million.

Work on two additional schools began in the spring: EBM (Municipal Nursery School) Pere Calafell, on C/Andrade in the neighbourhood of Sant Martí de Provençals, and EBM Teixonera (tentative name) on C/Arenys, in the Horta-Guinardó district.

Seven new nursery schools in progress

Meanwhile, seven other municipal nursery school expansion or creation projects are under way and are at different stages of the process.

The medium-term projects are EBM Can Carreras, which will be located in Nou Barris Central Park, in La Guineueta neighbourhood, and EBM Casernes (tentative name), on C/Fernando Pessoa, in the Sant Andreu de Palomar neighbourhood. Both are expected to begin construction in 2023 and be ready for the 2024-2025 school year.

The five remaining nursery school projects, which are being worked on in the longer term, are as follows:

  • EBM Sant Bartomeu (tentative name). C/Sant Bartolomeu, 5-7, Raval neighbourhood, Ciutat Vella district
  • EBM La Mar. Project to expand an existing school at C/Andrea Dòria, 40, la Barceloneta neighbourhood, Ciutat Vella
  • EBM La Marina del Prat Vermell (tentative name). C/L’Acer, 10, Marina del Prat Vermell neighbourhood, Sants-Montjuïc district
  • EBM Can Xiringoi. C/Ramon Albò, 77, Vilapicina i la Torre Llobeta neighbourhood, Nou Barris district
  • EBM Besòs-Maresme (tentative name). C/Marroc, 170, Besòs i el Maresme neighbourhood, Sant Martí district.

Procedures are also under way to expropriate a plot 1,200 square metres in area in the Antiga Esquerra de l’Eixample neighbourhood and use it for a new nursery.

This growth in the network of municipal nursery schools is part of the implementation of the Plan for Early Childhood Education and Care.
