Director, filmmaker, and set designer

LLUÍS DANÉS I ROCA

Graduated in Sculpture from the School of Arts and Crafts of Barcelona, Lluís Danés combined his studies with exhibitions and cultural projects in his hometown of Arenys de Mar. Largely self-taught, his training has been influenced by artists from diverse cultural backgrounds, all sharing visual arts as their primary form of expression.

Throughout his career, he has collaborated with professionals and artists from all over. As a set designer, artistic director, filmmaker, and audiovisual producer, he has developed projects for both national and international organisations, cultivating a distinctive and influential creative style.  Passionate about his profession, he is a collaborator on the postgraduate course in Art Direction at Elisava.

As an art director and set designer for theatre, film, and events, Lluís Danés is the author of numerous works. In performing arts, highlights include the opera and circus shows La torre dels somnis (Gran Teatre del Liceu, 2024–25) and La torre de Nadal (Christmas festivities at Plaça Catalunya, 2022).  In visual and object theatre, he has created and directed the shows Els colors de la Terra  (2017); Geronimo Stilton, the musical (2016); Nàufrags (Mercat de les Flors, 2016); El meu poble i jo (TNC, 2013); Wasteland (Mercat de les Flors, 2013); Llits (TNC, 2009); and Tranuites Circus (TNC, 2007).

Director of La Vampira de Barcelona a film that received five Gaudí Awards in 2021, including Best Film and Best Art Direction for Danés himself, as well as the Audience Award at the Sitges Film Festival. He has directed the film Laia (2016), and the documentaries La cançó censurada (2015), Temps de memòria  (2013), Yayoma (2012), Camins [Paths] (2011), Pla/Lectus (2009) and Llach. La revolta permanent  (2006). He has also directed television ceremonies such as the Premis Temps de les Arts (2022-23), Nit de Nits (2020, CCMA), and works like La dansa de la mort (2021).

He is responsible for the artistic direction and set design of the concerts Lluís Llach at the Palau Sant Jordi (2021), Centenari de Salvador Espriu (2013), Concert per la llibertat 2013), Electric Burma -tribute concert to the Burmese leader Aung San Suu Kyi- (2012), Les nostres cançons contra la sida  (2012), as well as the 2013 Ambassador of Conscience Award ceremony for Amnesty International. He has worked with artists such as Gemma Humet, Alfred Garcia, Roger Mas, Txarango, Sopa de Cabra, Carl Carlton, and Bikimel. 

He has worked with Peter Gabriel, The Edge, Michael Stipe, The National, and Cat Power on Amnesty International’s “60 Years of Human Rights” campaign (2018), as well as on music videos and audiovisual projects. At the Electric Burma concert, he collaborated with Bob Geldof, Bono (U2), The Edge (U2), Damien Rice, Vanessa Redgrave, Lupe Fiasco, and Riverdance, among others.

He has collaborated with the Festival Cruïlla and has designed and directed events such as El somni d'un gegant for the 2014 Piromusical de la Mercè, the show Els colors de la Terra at La Pedrera (2017),the set design for the 32a Gala del Premis Goya  (2018), the Premis Gaudí, and the official ceremony on 10 September for Catalonia’s National Day (2018-2020).  

He is responsible for the design and direction of exhibitions such as Per una educació en llibertat. Barcelona i l’escola. 1908-1979”(El Born CCM, 2021), and “Llach, com un arbre nu”  (Arts Santa Mònica, 2019).  Silver Laus Award in the "Channel Continuity" category in 2012, he also designed the new visual identity for Canal33 of Televisió de Catalunya in 2011.
