L’aljama de Barcelona era la comunitat jueva més important de Catalunya i de tota la corona catalanoaragonesa i estava relacionada amb les comunitats de la mediterrània, de la Provença i del nord d’Europa, florint-hi una brillant activitat cultural. El segle XIV va ser el període d’esplendor de l’art gòtic i de la il·luminació dels llibres jueus, com les hagadàs, que destaquen per la quantitat d’exemplars conservats així com per la qualitat de les miniatures que contenen, i que han esdevingut un dels testimonis més preuats del llegat dels jueus catalans.

Barcelona, the seat of a monarchy and a hub of Mediterranean trade, had an urban ethos that was receptive to the most innovative artistic influences in the opening decades of the 14th century. At this juncture in the Gothic era, the city’s workshops constituted a highly active centre for the production of Haggadot, manuscripts that contain the ritual of the Passover meal, which were commissioned by families living in the Call (Jewish quarter) in Barcelona and in other Jewish communities.

Des que, a partir del s. XIII, les ciutats europees van començar a aconseguir dels seus senyors el ius statuendi - la capacitat d'establir normes-, totes van mirar de treure'n el màxim profit. A Barcelona es va constituir un dret municipal propi que permetia la regulació del comerç i de les activitats productives, de la salut pública i de la seguretat entre d'altres aspectes.

Latvia. The fight for freedom

With the pact between Adolf Hitler and Josef Stalin on 23 August 1939, Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania were occupied by the army of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) in June 1940. One year later, National Socialist Germany broke the pact and invaded the Baltic countries. Just before the end of World War II, and with the Nazis on the verge of defeat, the USSR occupied Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania again in 1944. This occupation lasted 45 years.
