The last stretch of BCNegra
Round tables, music, and the delivery of the Pepe Caravalho Award to writer Don Winslow, on the last days of the festival.
The BCNegra festival will experience one of the highlights of its last days. In the Saló de Cent of the Barcelona City Hall, the American writer Don Winslow will receive the Pepe Caravalho Award, in a ceremony with the presence of the Deputy Mayor of Culture, Education, Science and Community, Jordi Martí, and the festival curator, Carlos Zanón. For health reasons, Don Winslow hasn't been able to travel to Barcelona and will receive the award virtually. The award, which takes its name from the well-known fictional detective created by Manuel Vázquez Montalbán and is now in its 17th edition, recognises the literary careers of writers in the field of crime novels. In previous years it has been awarded to Joyce Carol Oates, Juan Madrid, Donna León, Andreu Martín, P. D. Jaimes and Francisco González, among others.
The jury of the Prize particularly appreciated Winslow's ability to transform research and information into creative material and present, in a realistic fiction format and in a raw and direct way, some of the structural flaws that affect Western societies. Don Winslow, whose biography spans a variety of professions, including private detective, cinema manager and safari guide, is the author of a body of work that is significant in both quantity and literary weight. From his first novel, A Cool Breeze on the Underground, in 1991, to his latest volume, City on Fire, Winslow has become one of the world's most widely read authors. He has outstanding titles such as the trilogy that unceremoniously describes the history of drug trafficking on the US-Mexico border since the 1970s, consisting of The Power of the Dog, the multi-award-winning The Cartel, and The Border.
In addition, the festival counts with many more proposals in its final stretch. Among the planned round tables, you can find Ciutat Maragda, L. F. Baum, about true crime, with the participation of journalists and writers Carlos Quílez, Guillem Sànchez Marín and Tura Soler. This round table will be on 10 February, while on 11 February, you will be able to follow a conversation between the Scottish writer Irvine Welsh and Italian author Nicola Lagioia. On the weekend, there will be a verse battle with Dani Orviz and Salva Soler, a screening of Elio Quiroga's thriller La estaregia del pequinés, and a round table with the Scientific Police Division of the Mossos d'Esquadra. The concert by Joana Serrat and her band will bring this year's festival to a close.
