Did you know about the Espai Subirachs?

A centre devoted to the artist’s work, open to all.

Josep Maria Subirachs i Sitjar was one of the most international Catalan artists in the contemporary era, not only because of the diversity of media in which he worked – sculpture, painting, engraving and even scenography – but also because of the number of awards he won and all the works he exhibited around the world. The bulk of these works are found in the city of Barcelona; in fact, he was commissioned to decorate the Passion Façade of the Sagrada Família, although other pieces of his are also scattered about the towns of Catalonia. Subirachs was born in the Poblenou district of Barcelona in 1927 and was forced to give up his architecture studies, but that did not stop him from forging ahead with his career. As an adolescent, he started working under the orders of sculptors such as Enric Casanovas, who became so influential to him that he ended up excelling in this technique, even though he went on to explore many others.

You can learn more about the artist at the Espai Subirachs, a centre which has been displaying a permanent collection open to visitors since 2017. It is located at number 6 Carrer Batista, very close to the Poblenou underground and tramway stops, and you can visit it on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays from 5 to 8 pm.

Entry is free of charge, and you have the option of taking group guided tours for 5 euros per person. You can find more information on the timetables, location and reservations at the centre at this link.
