Science, from the inside

The Barcelona Biomedical Research Park celebrates its annual meeting with the public with numerous online activities and a face-to-face debate.

On the seafront, opposite Somorrostro beach, stands an emblematic building, both for the architecture of its large, circular, wooden-roofed building and for the work it carries out. It is the Barcelona Biomedical Research Park, the PRBB, a space that brings together six leading centres and which once a year opens the doors of its laboratories to show the public its scientific activity. This year, the OpenPRBB proposals will last a whole week, from October 18th to 22nd, and will be held in virtual format from Monday to Friday, and in situ on Saturday.

The aim of these days, in the words of the PRBB itself, is to raise awareness of the park and its research centres among the public, to promote new scientific vocations and to transmit the importance of critical thinking. To achieve this, the programme includes the broadcasting on YouTube of short videos on biomedical research, work in a laboratory in this field and projects to better understand how our bodies work and find new ways to combat certain diseases. In addition, on its Instagram profile, it will be possible to follow live interviews of three researchers with three instagramers who have specialized in science.

One of the highlights of the OpenPRBB are the guided tours of its laboratories to learn first-hand about the research being carried out. As in the previous edition, this year's restrictions to prevent COVID-19 have prevented in-person visits, but an online visit to a laboratory has been organized anyway, where you will be able to see live via YouTube how a research group works and ask the scientists your questions and concerns.

To round off, on Saturday 23 October, the only hybrid activity will take place, i.e. one that is both face-to-face and can be followed on YouTube. It is the round table How does the gender perspective affect biomedical research?, where not only the gender gap in science will be discussed, but also the treatment of diversity in biomedical research, its experiments and biases in the results. The session will include the participation of the neurobiologist Mara Dierssen, the doctor Nuria Argudo and the expert in scientific communication Gema Revuelta, with the moderation of the journalist Cristina Sáez.
