Smart City Week 2020

A Smart City Week for digital inclusion

A space to reflect on how technology can help to define the city model we want.

Since the first human invention, we have not stopped creating. The reason is simple: technology has made our lives easier and more comfortable. In fact, technological evolution has been so closely linked to humanity that today we are a technodependent species. The progress has never stopped and with the rise of the Internet, Big Data, sensors and hyperconnectivity, technology has taken a leap forward and has gone beyond the individual to propose solutions for better management and organization of the whole community. From this context arises the idea of the smart cities, a trend to which cities all over the world, including Barcelona, are going towards. To discuss this, from 9 to 15 November, Barcelona City Council and the Bit Lab Foundation are presenting a new edition of Smart City Week, which contents can be followed virtually.

This year's edition is based on digital inclusion and does so in the context of a pandemic. The isolation measures to contain the Covid-19 have put people's digital skills to test in order to remain connected to their environment. The digital divide has become more apparent than ever and, in order to achieve an inclusive city where people can maintain their social activity regardless of the circumstances of their environment, those for whom digitalization is more of a problem than an opportunity cannot be left out.

This poses a series of challenges that, together with the integration of technology into the urban fabric and its relationship with people, will be addressed from multiple points of view through the talks, debates, workshops and documentary screenings programmed throughout the event. An extensive programme of activities that will include national and international speakers to discuss the future of Barcelona from the perspective of the administration, research, innovation, architecture, urban planning and citizenship, among other areas.
